Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) in Oakland

La Cheim’s nonprofit Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) provides a variety of behavioral health services for the surrounding communities we serve.

Our Oakland-based clinic offers a Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient (IOP) program for adults, each of which provide intensive group- and milieu-based day treatment for people in mental health crisis. Clients can attend on-site, via Zoom, or via a mix of both. Refer yourself, a loved one, or a client under your care to PHP/IOP.

Consistent with our mission as a nonprofit, we aim to provide equitable and excellent mental health care in an inclusive, collaborative, and respectful manner — placing special emphasis on traditionally marginalized and underserved communities.

We serve adults in our Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) day treatment programs. (PHP/IOP referrals here.) We serve youth via our Street Academy therapy program.

For adults, the CMHC offers a Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) day treatment program for those in acute mental health crisis who have Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and/or Co-Occurring Disorders (COD). Day treatment takes place 3-5 days a week and incorporates milieu, group, and individual therapy, as well as individual psychiatry – with a mix of in-person and telehealth-based service delivery. Overseen by a seasoned psychiatrist, the interdisciplinary treatment team incorporates a diverse range of prescribers, therapists, and peer providers. We help clients address a wide range of treatment conditions, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, grief/loss, trauma, suicidal ideation, thought disorders, and relapse prevention for those in stable recovery from Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and/or Eating Disorders (ED).

Outcome measures show that on average, clients experience a statistically significant reduction in anxiety and depression measures over a successful course of day treatment attendance. Program graduates can benefit from ongoing supportive aftercare groups. Our day treatment community is known for being exceptionally rigorous yet relaxed – a warm, respectful, non-institutional setting in which adults can gather to support each other in healing and recovery.

For youth, the CMHC has also made in-person mental health services available to high school youth with Severe Emotional Disturbances (SED) matriculating at the Oakland Emiliano Zapata Street Academy. Services have included individual and group psychotherapy, case management and care coordination, and parent-educator education. La Cheim has provided mental health services to about a dozen youth annually on a pro bono basis.

In-Person, Virtual (Tele), and Hybrid (Mixed) Service

Relatively few PHP programs have successfully adapted to telehealth. La Cheim is among relatively few success stories that runs a virtual PHP with at least equal efficacy to our in-person program.
